Benefits of Inclined Bed Therapy for Better Sleep

WHAT IS INCLINED BED THERAPY?

Incline bed therapy, or IBT, involves raising the head of your bed 6 inches so that you’re sleeping on a 5° incline in order to ease sleep-related symptoms. Inclined bed therapy was developed two decades ago by Andrew K. Fletcher,8 a British mechanical engineer said to have “an avid interest in how things work.” He stumbled upon the theory by studying the circulatory system of plants.

HOW DOES IBT WORK?

Based on multiple experiments across the medical field, Fletcher noted that while sleeping in a flat, but inclined position, your body’s natural head-to-toe flow and drainage of fluids is improved using gravity. Therefore, circulation can occur more naturally and reduce issues stemming from blood flow or cerebrospinal fluid circulation.

CAN I BENEFIT FROM IBT?

  • Sleeping at even a slight 5° incline may have a number of benefits, including·
  • Improving blood circulation
  • Improving glymphatic drainage from the brain
  • Improving immune system function
  • Improving respiratory function
  • Easing symptoms associated with diabetes, glaucoma, migraines, multiple sclerosis, sleep apnea, acid reflux, edema, varicose veins and more!
