Eat Chocolate daily for added health, need I say more?

Incorporating chocolate into a daily diet plan has been proven beneficial for overall health. That’s great news, right? Here are just a couple of reasons to incorporate this delicious superfood into a daily diet regimen.

Benefits:

This amazing superfood contains Free-radical-fighting antioxidants as well as B vitamins-1,2,3,5 and Vitamins A, C, D, E. It’s also high in beneficial minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, and copper. Since it contains the molecule phenylethylamine, it is also a gentle antidepressant. It has healthy monounsaturated fat which is important for cardiovascular health. Also, it is known for improving brain function by raising serotonin levels which helps regulate mood, sleep, and appetite. Eating high-quality chocolate is known to lower cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, and reduce inflammation. Now knowing that a delicious treat can improve overall health, hold off a bit longer before trapping a bar because not any old bar will do.

Quality:

Consuming high-quality dark chocolate with at least 70% of cacao is best. The higher the percentage, the higher the benefit. Cacao is actually the plant species in which cocoa – and chocolate – is derived. The edible parts of this plant can be processed, dried and fermented to make the likes of cocoa butter, cocoa powder or chocolate. The milk in milk chocolate actually binds to the antioxidants in rendering them unavailable and therefore doesn’t offer the benefit of flavonoids. In other words, it basically cancels out all the benefits listed above. A high-quality bar should be organic, soy-free, dairy-free and gluten-free. The sugar content needs to stay under 5 grams per 1.5 ounce serving and a serving size is between 1-1.5 ounces per day.

Best Plants for Cleaning the Air

Clean air is a necessity. All living organisms need it for survival. Testing has proven that our indoor air quality is worse than the air outside. This new age problem is happening because more time is spent indoors than ever before in history. A couple simple solutions can help improve the air quality while spending time inside.

Get a plant. Keeping plants alive in your home and office helps produce oxygen that clears the air. The researchers at NASA suggest putting one plant per 100 square feet of indoor space for the most effective way to clean the air. The NASA Clean Air Study has listed the following as the 10 best indoor plants for improving air quality.

  1. English Ivy
  2. Golden Pothos
  3. Boston Fern
  4. Dracaena

Organic Dry Cleaning, is it truly Organic?

Can organic dry cleaning be truly organic if there isn’t a certified agency to control such measures? The simple answer is no. It cannot be truly organic, but there are ways to make it more eco-friendly. Luckily, the state of California is leading the way by helping future generations phase out the use of perchloroethylene by 2023. This chemical, also known as perc, is how the clothes become clean without the use of water; hence dry cleaning. The Environmental Protection Agency considers perc hazardous to our health and environment. Since the 1990’s alternative methods in dry cleanings, such as wet cleaning, silicon-based solvent, liquid carbon dioxide cleaning, and DF-2000 hydrocarbon solvent, have become more popular.

Wet cleaning and liquid carbon dioxide cleaning are the two safest:

Wet cleaning is precisely that, wet. Water and mild detergents along with computerized washers and dryers are used to make the clothes look their best. Due to this gentle cleaning method, the EPA considers it as one of the safest because of “no hazardous chemical use, no hazardous waste generation, no air pollution, and reduced potential for water and soil contamination.” The other option, liquid carbon dioxide, uses CO2 along with detergent as the cleaning solvent. Although this technique is considered eco-friendly, most dry cleaners opt out of using this method. The machinery used to administer CO2 is very expensive making it the least favored of the two.

Next time you need dry cleaning, ask which technique they use in the cleaning process. If your favorite dry cleaner doesn’t offer either method, let them know the state of California provides grant money to dry cleaners that switch from perc to either wet cleaning or CO2 to help promote healthy alternatives to the consumers and owners. Spread the word about eco-friendly methods and remember to look for either wet cleaning or liquid CO2 as the healthiest options.

Pillow Talk

Pillow talk in traditional terms is the ultimate in bedtime conversation. This could be an intimate conversation between partners or even a simple chat with your kids before kissing them goodnight. No matter who is involved in the conversation, one thing is for sure…a pillow is needed for pillow talk!

A pillow’s comfort level can be something different for each person. It can be dependent on your sleep position, curvature of the neck, as well as texture and feel. Knowing that all these factors come into play, the best solution for finding a new pillow is to try one. When you visit Snoozzz, we will provide you with options that will help determine your pillow foundation. Some options include woolly puffs, latex shreds, kapok, cotton, and all-natural tencel/recycled poly clusters. Other options include the size and shape. Once we’ve had our pillow talk, the next step is doing a test rest. We set up a range of options that will fit your wants and desires for perfect rest on any number of our organic mattresses. From there, you will be able to customize your desired thickness because some of our pillows are fully adjustable, allowing you to add in or take out as much of the insert as needed to find your perfect pillow fit!

The life expectancy of your pillow can run 1- 8 years depending on the material, care, and use. We recommend using a washable pillow cover to help regulate the amount of dead skin, sweat, and body oils that accumulate from contact with your face, scalp, and hair. In turn, this will help lengthen the pillow’s efficacy since it protects it from being overly saturated.

Come on in and visit us at Snoozzz, we will assist you in finding your perfect pillow fit for great pillow talk!

Plastic Free July

Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to ocean plastic pollution. This year is the 10th anniversary of this movement, so here are 10 tips to help you say no to single-use plastic this month and all year long.

  1. Continue to avoid the worst offenders like single-use plastic bags, straws, bottles, and utensils by choosing reusable and sustainable alternatives.
  2. Shop in bulk to avoid excess single-use plastic packaging.
  3. Shop your local farmer’s market for produce and meats that don’t come pre-packaged in plastic.
  4. Plan meals in advance to avoid single-use plastic associated with convenience foods like microwavable meals and fast food.
  5. As the coronavirus pandemic continues, commit to using bar soaps and washable face masks.
  6. If and when you do go out to dine, bring your own reusable containers to bring home leftovers instead of letting them package in plastic.
  7. Use baking soda or bar soap and washable cloths to do your dishes. For extra scrubbing power, opt for a copper scrubber instead of a plastic-based one.
  8. If you already own a Swiffer mop, make the swap to a washable reusable pad.
  9. Give up hair products in plastic bottles and opt for shampoo bars and salves and pomades in metal tins and glass jars.
  10. Avoid disposable plastic pens when possible by investing in a refillable fountain pen or reaching for a pencil instead.
